In summer 2009 the metal working company Multicut, Vildbjerg Denmark contacted The Business Development Centre Herning Ikast-Brande with an idea. The idea was to build a new research and development centre focusing on advanced manufacturing processes. The idea sprung from a visit in a similar centre in Sheffield (Sheffield University AMRC with Boeing), and a desire from The Boeing Company to contribute to the establishment of such a Danish center.

The above mentioned idea led to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the 1st of September 2009. The signing parties included The Boeing Company and 10 Danish companies and institutions. The parties agreed that they within 90 days should investigate the possibilities of establishing a Danish advanced Manufacturing Research Center in the middle of Jutland, Denmark. The outcome of the investigation was clear, it revealed a need and a strong support for a future Danish center focusing on advanced manufacturing.
